Hey everyone,

Things are really heating up here at Dafffy HQ. It's the most glorious time of year - it's DA fantasy season and we are heading towards the playoffs !! This is a good time to remind all of our followers - why we are here. Take a look at the short video and share amongst your coolest of friends.

By now, hopefully, you are aware that Dafffy intends to build the next generation fantasy football platform. The game is currently played in many leagues across the world, but every single dynasty auction fantasy football league requires the Commissioner to track transactions and salary cap outside of the game itself. The major platforms cant support this game and they will be left behind.

While we recognize this manually managed game fits the history of all fantasy / rotisserie sports, we want to automate the best fantasy game ever invented. At Dafffy we have been playing DA fantasy for (yikes!) 14 years now. We know and love the game and want to bring it to as wide an audience as possible.

This blog will promote and generate traction for this newly automated fantasy football game; provide DA fantasy advice on strategies and trends throughout the season, and in general, build the DA fantasy football community, from which we will thrive.

We welcome you to the community and hope you'll join us in building this game together.

Week Eight: Managing Injuries in DA Fantasy

Welcome back DA Fantasy fans!

Come back often as I blog about all things DA Fantasy at Dafffy.com and point out DA Fantasy nuggets (using a data-based approach!) to help you manage your dynasty auction rosters this year and get the slight edges you need to win.

A lot of people are complaining that this season their rosters are getting decimated with injuries and I am sure it’s a factual statement. However, football is a violent sport, injuries are a significant part of the game.

Each year, fantasy teams are crippled by injuries and if your team is lucky enough to be spared it is merely good fortune, not super-genius GM work.

Many years ago, a friend in a seasonal league told me he was giving up fantasy football because the variability of injuries was too random. He’d built a strong team, he said, but then his WR1 goes down with a season ending injury in week 11 and he loses. What he said makes sense. There is a lot of variability in fantasy.

Unmentioned in this conversation was his making a strong case against seasonal fantasy and towards DA Fantasy where larger rosters can mitigate these concerns somewhat.

But I countered that the variability of fantasy injuries is one big reason this game is so challenging and strategic. I find the strategic element to be the most fun of all the reasons to play DA Fantasy.

If you lose your WR1 in week 11 and backfill with whatever the waiver wire has available, you are not playing fantasy football as strategically as you could.

We all need to plan for injuries and your comfortability of risk plays a factor. Even in DA Fantasy leagues your last 2-3 roster positions, depending on bench size, should be flexible – meaning solid depth players on single year contracts at good values that can be dropped to upgrade the position.

This is your Injury Mitigation Strateg y – you should have multiple backups to plug and play so you are not caught completely short on a critical week. Can you replace AJ Brown in week 11? Unlikely. But let’s look at some factors that can help you avoid such a situation.

First, we need talented players, even our non-starters have to be talented. Always, always, always, start with talent.

Then we need to factor in opportunity, volume, and upside, each of which are components of the coaching systems being used as well as the team’s success so far this year.

A run first offense such as PIT, SEA or BAL is not the system to look for a backup WR. They likely have only 1-2 WR’s worthy of play each week and they are currently rostered by others. George Pickens, Zay Flowers and DK Metcalf / Jaxon Smith-Njigba are dominating targets and receptions for their teams but will not be available if you need them and the other wideouts on these teams are dart throws for productivity.

Bad teams need to throw the ball more, so when targeting depth / upside WR, seek them on bad teams who are often down in the second half. The offense needs to throw to have a chance to win, so volume and opportunity become greater factors than a pass first system, for example. A WR2 on a bad team can supplement your lineup if he is always getting five 4 ^th quarter targets each week.

The bad team approach needs to use caution, nothing is absolute.

They are bad teams for a reason. Your WR may be talented, but is his QB? DeShaun Watson (pre-injury), Gardner Minshew and Will Levis are not good QB’s. I love Diontae Johnson , CAR, but he has no one throwing to him. There is a fine line to walk here, which makes the long term research and strategic approach more valuable in DA Fantasy than seasonal leagues due to larger roster sizes

Players like Ladd McConkey , LAC, and Michael Wilson in AZ and Cade Otten , TB (for those that lost either Mike Evans or Chris Godwin ) were readily available in week 8 are who I want to use as examples.

The wideouts are talented players, both play on middling teams that are often down in the second half, and McConkey and Wilson generate solid targets each week ( McConkey, 6 targets/gm.; Wilson 5 targets /gm .). I own each of them in separate leagues.

Dafffy is looking to perfect the game of fantasy football and bring users as close to managing an NFL franchise as possible. Trash talking your friends is still a part of the DA Fantasy game because that’s what DA Fantasy is - the best parts of seasonal fantasy BUT with a whole lot more.

I targeted McConkey early on during my rookie research. See our rookie WR report here. And so, I knew the talent was there. I, like many people, was not sold on Justin Herbert , and like MIA no good backup behind Tua Tagovailoa , neither does LAC ( Taylor Heineke ). As I paid attention each week I noticed that Ladd put up more targets that other WR (predominantly Quentin Johnson ) and was finding the end zone.

Michael Wilson is a similar story. Wilson is talented, sees good targets and has talent, but all the hubbub was about Marvin Harrison Jr, and rightly so. But a week to week look at targets showed even with MHJ on the other side Wilson averaged 7+ targets in wks. 3-5. Because ARI ranks 29 ^th in defense, a few contributing factors came together.

I put Cade Otten here specifically to illustrate how to use injuries to your advantage even if only for 3-4 weeks. I love me some Mike Evans and Chris Godwin , but when they both went down, who was the next man up?

A lot of people went with Jalen McMillan , who may end up being the best choice for the remainder of this season. I was not sold. And I viewed the situation differently because Cade Otten already had the confidence of Baker Mayfield , (yup, dure do love me some Baker!). Otten averaged 6+ targets in weeks 3-5, before the injuries. For me, he was the logical short-term replacement and remember Mike Evans may come back in wk. 12 for the (fantasy) playoffs at which point McMillan could fall off the map.

This illustrates the strategic way we need to manage injuries. Planning long term, but ready to act in the short term as opportunities present themselves. It’s what the NFL GM’s do and why DA Fantasy brings you closer to the real game than ever before.

Always be watching, always try to understand the situation, track the talent and be open to flexibility at the back end of your roster.

Everyone has their own style (another really cool thing about DA Fantasy is the variety of team building strategies is endless) so there is no single way to manage a DA Fantasy team.

If Otten helps me win 3-4 games, he is a great short-term filler, which are terms you don’t usually hear in DA Fantasy. He sure helped in week 8 with 10 targets, 9 reception, 81 yards and two TD’s. The cat is now out of the bag, but he should still be available in many leagues as a good short-term filler. Get him for teh next four weeks... unless a better option becomes available in the next few weeks....

TLDR, QB Review

Jayden Daniels is the premier rookie QB at this point, but Caleb Williams, Bo Nix and Drake Maye are gaining valuable rookie experience and should be rostered now, while Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy require a multi-year perspective. If you have bench depth, don’t fear adding these two and waiting for results in late 2025.

This week we look at wideouts.

Week Six Rookie WR Review, Part I

As I sat down to write this on Tuesday morning I got to 1200 words and realized I’m not authoring a book, it’s just a humble dynasty auction blog. So, I will be publishing it in two parts this week. What’s that? Bonus blog coverage, you say. Damned right, extra DA Fantasy knowledge from DAFFFY to help you succeed at the game we all love. Let’s dig in, shall we?

There is a common axiom in fantasy football that wideouts don’t truly blossom until year three and historically, if you look at the progression of wide receivers in the league, year three is the year we can expect them to totally grasp the speed of the NFL, understand the defensive alignments and be able to adjust routes as needed to be a quality NFL WR.

Talent always creates exceptions and is one reason forecasting positional growth and breakouts is exceedingly difficult.

Coming out of the NFL Draft in April, the receivers I had in the best situations were Marvin Harrison Jr. (MHJ), (AZ), Xavier Worthy (KC), Malik Nabors (NYG) , Ladd McConkey (LAC), Brian Thomas Jr (JAX) and Rome Odunze (CHI).

I was also quite high on Ja’Lynn Polk (NE), Troy Franklin (DEN) and Xavier Leggette (CAR) and Keon Coleman (BUF) despite their bad landing situations.

The difference in these groupings is pure situation. All these guys are talented, but some landed better than others.

MHJ jumps to a team with an accurate longballer in Kyler and was competing against Zay Jones, Michael Wilson, and Greg Dortch for snaps. He was going to start the season as the WR2 on the team regardless. Talent + good situation makes him the standout of the rookie WR class and he’s the clear WR1 on AZ.

Ja’Lynn Polk is very talented out of Washington, but his situation is terrible. It’s the Patriots – their offensive line talent is, what’s the word, oh yeah – offensive! This mismatched patchwork of gibberish they call an OL may be the worst in the NFL. He also has a rookie QB in Drake Maye who wasn’t starting the season and so his QB was… Jacoby Brissett. A bad situation in many ways offsets his talent.

In dynasty it’s talent, then situation which matters.

Marvin Harrison Jr.

The talent on MHJ is immense, his father was one of my favorite WR’s after all, and as a Patriots fan, I hated Harrison and Peyton, but always respected the talent. They say the apple doesn’t fall far and everyone expected MHJ to come in big and contribute immediately. We were right.

After a very slow opening day (3 targets, one reception and 4 yards, ugh!), but he rebounded well and put up 25-14-139 and four TD’s. He is everything he was reported to be.

But the time to get him was in the auction draft, so what do I do now? Trade for him. Now. He will be a low end WR1 high end WR2 for this season and perhaps next and then will explode as a top five weekly WR, barring injury. Think Justin Jefferson, Amon Ra (love the sun god!) and Cee Dee Lamb types. Get him now.

I grabbed MHJ in all drafts I could get him, in one DA league I was cap constrained and could not meet the asking price, but in my other DA league I snagged him, signed him to a five-year deal and am pleased. I even drafted him in round one in multiple standard snake drafts where I was pick 10, 11, or 12.

Xavier Worthy

Talk about a great situation. How about stepping into the two-time reigning NFL champions. He was joining rookie standout in 2023, Rashee Rice, who just had a 100+ yard receptions, a very good OL and one of the savviest QBs of all time in Patrick Mahomes, Mahomie to my crew…

My concerns about Andy Reid’s late game clock management have been addressed as he has grown as a coach. He also recognizes talent and is very good at scheming to get players open. Think Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in 2020-2021 where they were #1 at their respective positions. Each was identified before the league caught up and schemed into plays. Each are still at the top of their game, which is testament to Reid’s eye for talent.

And in week five his situation improved with Rashee Rice suffering a knew injury and requiring LCL surgery, so he is out for the year, making Xavier the default WR1 in this offense.

If he’s available, you have to pick him up. Mahomie has not had a stellar season so far, as all Mahomie owners know already. However, he has the talent, the situation, and the experience to perform at a high level with the tools provided.

I envision Kelce and Noah Gray picking up some slack in targets by running more two TE sets. Juju Smith Schuster is also in the picture and will see an increase in opportunity, but the deal is thus – 105 catches from Rashee last year need to go somewhere, my money is on Xavier. And not for nothing, but he has a great schedule in weeks 15 and 16 (CLE, HOU). Expect to see him win some playoff games for teams this season.

Malik Nabors

The highly touted WR came to NY in a very good situation, but not a great one.

He was the highest-graded Power Five wide receiver last season (93.1) at LSU, he was the second wideout off the board behind MHJ, but his QB situation was suspect.

Which Daniel Jones would stand up? A Daniel jones who could produce the first Giants WR to gain 800+ yards since Odell Beckham Jr. (OBJ). Yeah, that was in 2018, and he hasn’t done it yet. Jones has averaged more than 3,000 yards per season passing since he began in 2019, but consistency has been a problem.

Nabors first game, much like MHJ was uneventful, he was involved at 7-5-66, but that was him just getting his feet wet. He then went OFF in week two with 18-10-127-1. EIGHTEEN targets in a single game. All my talk about situations, if you find a wideout who is getting 15+ targets grab them, even if on a crappy O. The focus on targeting Nabors will continue and in such a good situation (until Daniel Jones turns into Gardner Minshew on Thanksgiving or so….)

Depending on your scoring system Nabors is probably your league’s leading wideout. Expect this to continue barring injury to him or Jones (Drew Lock is his backup…ugh) As long as his situation remains solid, he is a top end WR1 for the foreseeable future.

Ladd McConkey

The situation was enticing but suspect for McConkey.

Sure, he was going to a team with a solid if not tremendous QB (Justin Herbert) and sure, they had just lost their top three targets from 2023, mainly Keenan Allen being traded to CHI), so the situation was promising. He was battling Quentin Johnson (rookie drafted in 2023) and would likely see the field often.

But the key to situations is always the coaching and the Chargers were bringing in Jim Harbaugh and a new OC in Greg Roman. Harbaugh is a versatile coach who uses a West Coast offense. But how much would he rely on the pass especially with a rookie as his top WR.

McConkey has been engaged. He’s averaging more than six targets per game and just under four receptions so far.

I am actually quite high on him, having just traded for him in one league and picking him up on waivers earlier this season in another. The consistent targets tell me he has a role in this west coast offense. The fact that the Chargers have a decent run game (JK Dobbins / Gus Edwards) will keep defenses honest and I think he will settle in as a high end WR2 with WR1 upside on some favorable matchups.

Great depth WR and an asset to your lineup if you can get him.

Week Five Dynasty Auction Fantasy (DA Fantasy) News and Nuggets

Hello DA fantasy fans,

As we head into week five, it’s a good time to assess this year’s rookies.

Yes, it’s early, but dynasty auction fantasy is all about anticipating moves ahead of time to maximize your lineups and point potential. We’ll start with QB’s this week and move to WR’s and RB’s after that. Come back often as I will be blogging each week where I will point out DA fantasy nuggets to help you manage your dynasty auction rosters this year and get the slight edges you need to win.

We are constantly re-assessing our lineups and determining a rookie’s upside potential is critical to establishing a dominant dynasty auction team and putting together a lineup that is obviously better than the current one New England Patriots GM, Eliot Wolf has assembled.

Two of the top three rookie QB’s in this year’s draft are showing immediate returns – and the third, gets his opportunity to shine this week.

Number 1 overall, Caleb Williams started off slower than #2 overall, Jayden Daniels.

Williams’ overall PFF pass grade of 54.4 is, how do we say it? It’s not good, Bob. So he is a wait and see at the moment, but he has a high ceiling. He has thrown for over 300 yards twice in the last three weeks. Sure, sure, against terrible secondaries like Indy (363-2) and Car (304-2), but he has the skills to score against the poor defenses in the league – and he is only five games into his career. Good skill positions (DJ Moore, Keenan, D’Andre) around him and a top ten (#9) pass blocking OL, set him up well not just for this year but the next few. You likely have better options, as Williams is risky unless the matchup is good, but he has a great schedule with only tough defenses in NE and MIN in weeks 10, 12 and 15, respectively. If you can pry his so-so fantasy start into a trade for him, take advantage now, I don’t think his talent will be hidden for much longer.

WAS QB Jayden Daniels (#2 overall, QB2) has already proven himself and likely cost a pretty penny at auction this year. He was worth it. He’s currently sitting in the top five QB’s depending on your scoring system and is most certainly making Chicago GM Ryan Poles wonder is he chose… poorly. Incredibly efficient at a 77% completion rate, including two games completing over 86% of his passes. Daniels also helps himself in the rushing game – from a fantasy perspective a dual option QB – Lamar, Jalen, Kyler-type is the best way to maximize points – the downside is the inherent injury risk faced by rushing QB’s. Daniels has 300 yards rushing second only to Lamar (363 RuYds).

He too, has talent at skill positions (Da Commish has been a huge fan of Terry McLauren, well, since forever and the burgeoning Brian Robinson / Austin Ekeler backfield keeps defensive fronts honest). Add in a solid OL (fifth in Pass blocking) and you see long term success for this guy if Adam Peters (WAS GM) builds well under the new ownership team.

The formula for successful QBs in the NFL is already proven – start with talent and a levelheaded QB, add in talent at skill positions around him and give him time to throw. That sets any QB up for success. But add in a coaching system that fits the QB style and now the same QB is set up for greatness.

Any other rookie QB’s set up well? In short, umm, no.

Drake Maye - #3, QB3, is about to start, but his situation is different from Jayden and Caleb’s in that he has none of the success factors listed above. Demario Douglas and Ja’Lynn Polk (more on him in next week’s rookie WR edition) are just not quality wideouts right now. Polk is off to a good rookie start and appears to have the talent, but the OL is a disaster (30th out of 32 teams) and there is only so much pressure Rhamondre Stevenson can take off the rookie QB, even in a run first offense.

Michael Penix – #8 overall, QB4, is going to sit for a while behind franchise QB Kirk Cousins, whose four–year, $180 million deal in March kind of locked him into that role before Penix was drafted. Overall, he has a high likelihood of success, but he is going to need to sit on your bench for a while and that may not be the best roster management decision for you. If you have a deep bench, he’s a great stash and Cousins is coming off a bad Achilles injury.

JJ McCarthy, #10, QB5, is on IR due to a torn meniscus that required surgery and is missing his rookie season, an inauspicious start to say the least. Assuming he comes back with full mobility, he steps into a very good situation if you like his talent. I am not yet sold on his talent versus a Penix or a Drake Maye. But if you have bench space, he can be a low-end flyer for a cheap salary.

Bo Nix, #12, QB6, is starting similarly to Caleb Williams. They are each at 62-63% efficiency, and Caleb has about two hundred more yards and 2 more TD’s than Nix. Denver has a top five pass blocking OL but both the scheme and the talent around him are lacking. Denver runs an Air Coryell offense where you take vertical shots to open up the power running game. They have the backs (Javonte Williams, power rush, and Jaleel McLaughlin, pass catching) but Courtland Sutton is not the deep threat they need to create space underneath. Perhaps fellow rookie Troy Franklin matures to take this role, but that has yet to be determined at this moment.

Dynasty Auction Look Around - Wk 5

Hello DA fantasy fans,

We’re at the quarter pole in the 2024 Dynasty Auction Fantasy season, and as usual it has been one of many surprises.

Come back often as I will be blogging each week where I will point out DA fantasy nuggets to help you manage your dynasty auction rosters this year and get the slight edges you need to win.

· Is it coaching malfeasance for MIA to not have had an adequate replacement for Tua, who coming into the season already had a history of concussions. Tyreek is already visibly upset on the sidelines and the other fantasy mainstays in this O Jaylen Waddle and De’Von Achane are suffering as a result.

· In the NFC, I am noticing that the entire NFC East has no defense. The division is giving up an average of 24 PPG !!

o WAS and the emergence of Jayden Daniels lead the division at 3-1 but give up 25.5 PPG. From a Dynasty perspective a young, strong-armed QB whose defensive gives up a lot of points and thus requires a lot of offense to win. That is the scenario we dream of in fantasy – sign me up for Daniels, McLauren (and some of us have long loved Terry) and Brian Robinson.

o DAL, PHI and even the NYG have studs that need to get fed the ball because of defensive woes.

§ Of course, Dak and CeeDee, but do not miss out on TE Ferguson and Brandon Aubrey. Yes, a Kicker at 5-5 from 49 and under and 6-7 from 50+, there is a lot of points out there. I have won half my games in one league I am in because of Aubrey outscoring my opponent flex or TE option. When you are giving up 26 PPG you need all the points you can get.

§ PHI is on a bye, and you know their DA players. Many of you have had AJ Brown on your bench for a while as your WR1. I feel ya. But while AJ is recovering, Dallas Goedert seems to be Jalen’s binky – especially nowt that Devonte Smith is out. With a full squad healthy he will not be dominant but as noted above, PHI is going to need to score a lot this year to win, and Dallas is my pick on this high-flying O for the sneaky dynasty auction player than can make a difference down the stretch.

§ Hey, have you guys heard about Malik Nabors? Of course you have. If you are reading this, you hopefully grabbed Nabors as a WR2 with upside. The volume he sees from Daniel Jones is unreal. Nabors has 51 targets through 4 games. That is 9 more than Nico Colins in HOU and 13 more than the sun god (Amon-Ra St. Brown). Amon-Ra’s value has always been volume in this high-flying offense so to be crushing him at volume is notable. But he is unavailable in your league. Wan’Dale Robinson, however, is someone you should be looking at. This is his third year in the league and so he is primed for the WR third year leap, but also with Nabors taking up the defense’s attention, he is worthy of a long-term contract. He has one TD this year through four games. He has had one TD per year so far. Get him before he goes off. It’s coming, perhaps not this week as SEA DB’s are solid, but why it for him to go off before you grab him.

DA Look Ahead:

I am trying to grab as many pieces of the ARI offense as I can. Sure, Harrison Jr is unavailable, unless you won him at auction this year, as I did repeatedly. But TE McBride (3 games played) and WR’s Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch each have 20 targets thus far this season. Their fantasy playoff schedule is awesome. They face NE (wk. 15), CAR and LAR, respectively. The LAR give up a lot of points to WR’s and make a great WR3 / flex start when the games really matter.

Intro to Dynasty Auction fantasy football

Think fantasy football can't get any better? Think again!

Welcome to Dafffy! Your one stop shop for Dynasty Auction fantasy football.

DA football has been around for a long time and is played in leagues all around the country today. But, true to the origins of every fantasy game, it's beginnings are manually based. To play the game today requires manual effort as there is no platform that can support this next generation version of fantasy football - yet.

Dafffy got tired of complaining about the lack of functionality to the market leaders - ESPN, CBSSports and Yahoo! so we decided to build our own game - to truly fulfill the original goal of fantasy games - managing a franchise as well as or better than a real life NFL GM's!!

The strategy of forming your own team, the trash talk, the competition & camaraderie - the game we are building still has all the great parts of standard fantasy football but we just do everything else better.

* Hate managing league finances as a Commissioner, yeah we get it, we're sophisticated fantasy gamers too. We're building a fix.

* Hate not being able to grab the best RB each year because your randomized draft pick stinks - yeah, feel you. We prefer an auction process - you want CMC - he's yours - you just need to outbid your fellow franchise owners.

* Hate re-drafting year after year - yeah we get that too. That's why we are a dynasty league. You signed CMC for $9. What a great value. Sign him for up to five years - just like a real NFL GM. No other fantasy gaming platform does this.

* Standard snake drafts are tedious as you wait for your next turn. Again, we changed the game. A Live Auction Draft - the draft methodology you didn't know you wanted. Going going gone... you win the player. It's way more dynamic than a snake draft.
